CURIOSIDADES SOBRE INGLATERRA/CURIOSITIES ABOUT ENGLAND

En un mes en Inglaterra puedes descubrir muchas cosas que, por muy famoso que sea el país, nunca sabrás si no vives durante una temporada en él o al menos vienes a visitarlo (EJEM EJEM me dirijo a mis queridos amigos y familia). Y es que antes de venir aquí, lo único que sabes es que las cabinas son rojas, la comida es basura, que hay muchos españoles, y que los ingleses son como el tiempo, fríos. Pues amigos, estáis muy equivocados. Ni las cabinas son rojas (excepto en Londres), ni la comida es tan basura como se piensa, ni los ingleses son fríos (en todo caso INGLATERRA es fría, ¿tendrá eso algo que ver?), y bueno, lo de los españoles... ya es un caso aparte del que hablaré más tarde.
England is a very famous country, but there are many things that you don't know about it until you live in it for a while or just come to visit it. Before coming, the only you know is that payphones are red, food is rubbish, there are a lot of spanish people, and english people is unfriendly. Well, if you think so, you're very wrong. Payphones are not red here (but in London), food is not as rubbish as you think, english people is not that unfriendly, and spanish people... well, i'll talk about it later.

¿Sabéis de esos gatos negros que, si te los cruzas, dan mala suerte? Pues bien, por lo visto, aquí es todo lo contrario, ¡traen buena suerte! Así que, si alguna vez vienes por UK y te cruzas con uno... KEEP CALM, BLACK CATS MEAN GOOD LUCK!
Do you know about that black cats that mean bad luck? Well, it seems that it's the opposite here. It means good luck! So if you ever come her and find one... KEEP CALM, BLACK CATS MEAN GOOD LUCK!

Volvamos al tema de la gente inglesa. Personalmente, no diría que son fríos. De hecho, son muy amables y educados, ¿ya he mencionado que son educados? Porque lo son, ¡y mucho! Aún no te has tropezado con alguien, y ya se está disculpando. Dan las gracias hasta al conductor del autobús al bajar en su destino. Digamos que PLEASE, THANK YOU o CHEERS, y YOU'RE WELCOME son algunas de las palabras o expresiones más importantes del vocabulario inglés. Si un día me levanto decaída o triste, no importa, porque cuando salga a la calle seguramente va a haber alguien que me mire a la cara y me sonría sin conocerme de nada alegrándome, así, el día. Por no mencionar el primer día que me perdí en este DIMINUTO pueblo y una señora me dejó su móvil para llamar a mi host mum, y hasta me llevó en coche a mi casa! Yo diría que, más que frías, son personas distantes. Pero, como todo el mundo, hacen bromas, se ríen, hablan, y todo eso que todas las personas normales y corrientes solemos hacer. Sin embargo, dejadme daros un consejo: no intentéis hacer una broma el primer día que lleguéis a Inglaterra, si no sabéis expresaros bien en inglés, porque ya os adelanto yo que NO va a tener gracia.

About english people, I wouldn't say that they're unfriendly. Actually, they are very kind and polite, have I already said that they're polite? Because they really are! You didn't even trip them, and they already are apologizing. They even thank the bus driver just for driving them wherever they are paying for going. I would say that PLEASE, THANK YOU or CHEERS, and YOU'RE WELCOME are some of the most important words of the english vocabulary. If I ever wake up sad or homesick, it doesn't matter, because I am sure I will see someone who will look at me and just smile. Furthermore, my first day in this SMALL village, when I got lost, a very kind woman let me use her mobile phone to call my hm and then she took me home by car. I would definitely say that english people is distant, but not unfriendly or unkind at all. But, as everybody, they joke, laugh, talk, and everything that normal people usually do. However, let me give you an advice: don't try to joke the first day that you get here to England, if you can't express yourself properly in english, because it WON'T be funny at all.

Españoles, mis queridos y echados en falta españoles. Cierto! En UK hay muchos españoles o, simplemente, gente que habla español. Hasta me atrevería a decir que hay casi más personas españolas y/o de otros países que ingleses. Rebobinando un poco, cuando estaba con las entrevistas con las host families, directamente iba a las que no vivían en Londres porque, como todo el mundo sabe, está lleno de españoles, y quería evitarme el hablar en español durante toda mi estancia, cosa que no he sido capaz de conseguir aún viviendo en un pequeño pueblo a una hora y media de la capi (y sólo llevo aquí un mes!). Y es que Londres o, en general, Inglaterra es un país de oportunidades. Hay trabajo. Sí, ¡has leído bien! ¡TRABAJO! Eso que tanto se echa de menos en España! Así que si estás en el paro, sin hacer nada, y necesitas encontrar trabajo o, simplemente, te gustaría probar y, de paso, vivir un nueva experiencia, ni siquiera tienes que preocuparte por el nivel de inglés, por mínimo que sea, podrás encontrar trabajo aquí. Y ser au pair es una muy buena elección!

My dear spanish people, I miss you already! It's right that there're many spanish people in UK or just people who speaks spanish. I dare to say that there're more spanish people or from other countries than english people. Let's go back when I started to be interviewed by host families. I didn't want to stay with a host family from London because, as everybody knows, there're so many spanish people, and I didn't want to speak spanish during my stay here, but I did, even when I live in a small village to one and a half hour from the capital. London, well actually, mostly, England is a city of opportunities. There is job. Yes, you read it well! JOB! What you can't find at all in Spain! So, if you're unemployed and need to find a job or just would like to try and live a new experience, you don't even need to have a really good english, and a very good choice is being an au pair!

Vamos ahora con la comida. Aparentemente, UK es un país donde se come únicamente comida basura. Pues, dejadme deciros que eso no es del todo cierto. Vale, tenemos el típico desayuno inglés que está compuesto por huevos fritos, bacon, salchichas y algo más que no recuerdo. Vale, también tenemos el típico fish&chips, pescado frito con patatas fritas, y también podemos encontrar una gran variedad de cadenas de restaurantes de comida rápida. Pero, también hay verduras y frutas, ¿sabéis? y, ¿a que no sabéis de que está formado otro de los platos típicos ingleses conocido como Sunday Roast? Nada más ni nada menos que de distintos tipos de carne y patatas asadas, acompañado de verduras al vapor. No suena muy a comida basura, ¿a que no?
Let's talk about english food now. Apparently, UK is a country where people only eat rubbish food. Well, let me tell that that's not completely right. Ok, we have the typical english breakfast that consists of fried eggs, bacon, sausages, and something else that I can't remember. Ok, we also have the typical fish and chips, fried fish and chips, and we also can find many kinds of restaurants of fast food. But, there also are veggies and fruits, you know? And do you know that there is another english typical meal called Sunday Roast? It's all about different kind of meat, roast potatoes, and steamed vegetables. It does not sound very rubbish food, does it?

Otra cosa que no sabía antes de venir aquí es con cuántos años eres mayor de edad en este país. Como en casi todos los países fuera de España, es a los 21... pensaba que aquí también lo sería. Pero, no! Me lo dijeron unas chicas inglesas (muy majas, por cierto) con las que salí a cenar la semana pasada. Me preguntaron qué quería tomar para beber durante la cena. Como sabían que tengo 18 años, me empezaron a nombrar los distintos cócteles y cervezas que habían para tomar. Fue muy gracioso! jaja La cerveza aquí es carísima, por cierto.
Another thing that I didn't know before coming is how old you have to be to be an adult in this country. As in almost every country out of Spain, you are an adult when you are 21, I thought that it would be the same here. But I was wrong! Three english girls (very kind, by the way) that I met last week for dinner told me about it. They asked me what I wanted for drink and, as they know I am 18, they started to read me the alcoholic drinks of the menu. It was so funny! haha Beer is very expensive here, by the way.

Algo que no es una curiosidad, porque ya todo el mundo lo sabe, es que aquí conducen por el lado contrario. Pero lo que sí es curioso es la sensación que te entra cuando vas de copiloto que parece que te vas a estampar con todos y cada uno de los coches que hay a tu alrededor. Es como si no hubieran normas de tráfico. Parece que la gente conduce como quiere, aunque no sea así.

Something that is not a curiosity, because everybody already knows about it, is that here they drive on the other side. But what it is a curiosity is what you feel when you are on the left site in the car. It looks like you're going to crash with every single car that is around you. It looks like there is no traffic laws or something. It's like they drive how they want to, although it's not like that.

Ahora mismo no se me ocurren más cosas, pero ¡seguro que las hay!

MY FIRST MONTH!

En un abrir y cerrar de ojos ya ha pasado un mes desde que llegué a este últimamente ya no tan frío país. Ese es el tiempo que ha pasado hasta que POR FIN he conocido a gente de mi edad, es decir a PERSONAS QUE NO SON NI NIÑOS NI MADRES. Lo escribo en mayúsculas porque, en el pueblo donde vivo, al parecer, eso es lo que más hay, por no decir lo único que hay. Al principio, me propuse no quedar con españoles porque no aprendería inglés... y pasaron días y semanas y (si me descuido) meses. Y es que cuando vienes a UK a aprender inglés, te esperas (por lo menos yo) conocer a gente inglesa o, al menos, que hable inglés. Pero cuando ves que pasan días y semanas y no hay nadie con quien poder quedar (excepto españoles), obviamente, no vas a quedarte en casa hablando con las paredes.

It's already been a while since I arrived to this country that is not as cold as it usually is. At last, I've met people, I mean PEOPLE WHO IS NOT CHILDREN OR MOTHERS. I capitalized, because it seems most people here are kids or mums. At first, I didn't want to meet spanish people because that way i wouldn't learn english... but time passed and i didn't find anyone to meet. When i came to UK, i expected to know english people or, at least, people who speaks english. But, when i saw that time passed and there was no people to meet (but spanish people), obviously I was not going to stay at home talking to the walls.

Es difícil mejorar tu inglés cuando pasas casi todo el día solo en casa sin nadie con quien hablar, así que si alguien se está preguntando si las clases de inglés son necesarias cuando vas a venir de au pair a Inglaterra para aprender inglés... SÍ, LO SON! Sin embargo, hay muchas otras formas de mejorar tu inglés y relacionarte con gente al mismo tiempo, como por ejemplo hacer de voluntario en la biblioteca local más cercana o, incluso, en el colegio de tus host kids. Ya que he mencionado la biblioteca, tengo que decir que puede llegar a ser una gran fuente de información y de ayuda. Puedes encontrar una gran variedad de libros muy útiles para aprender o mejorar tu inglés, y organizan muchas quedadas en cafés para hacer lecturas rápidas, lo que está muy bien, porque puedes conocer a gente nueva y, seguramente, a au pairs de otros países. Si tienes suerte, incluso puedes llegar a encontrar lecciones de inglés gratuitas.

It's hard to improve my English when I'm almost all day long at home without someone to talk to, so if someone's wondering if English classes are necessary when coming as an au pair to England to learn English... YES, THEY ARE! However, there are a lot of ways to improve your English and socialize at the same time. For example, you can volunteer at the nearest local library or, even at your host kids' school. Furthermore, you can find many kinds of useful books to learn or improve your English, and there are a lot of meetings at coffees which is really good, because you'll be able to meet new people and even au pairs from different countries. If you have good luck, you may even find free English lessons!

Durante el tiempo que llevo aquí, me he dado cuenta de que tratar con niños no es tan fácil como parece y, menos, si hablan otro idioma que tú no dominas con fluidez. El no poder expresarte como te gustaría, a veces, puede llegar a ser muy frustrante. Así que, una vez más, recomiendo que os apuntéis a clases de inglés o toméis alguna otra alternativa para poder mejorar vuestras habilidades inglesas. 

During my stay here, I've realized that looking after children is not as easy as it looks like, it's even harder when they speak a different language that you can't speak fluently. Not being able to express yourself as you would like to, can become so frustrating.

So, if you're thinking of becoming an au pair or something similar, and you want to improve your English, take English classes or just take another choice to be able to improve your English skills.

El bolso de una au pair/ Au pair handbag

Quería escribir sobre este tema, porque creo que es muy interesante y curioso, y aunque pueda parecer una tontería, tal vez (si vas a ser au pair) te sirva de ayuda. Créeme, si yo hubiera sabido lo que llevar en mi bolso los primeros días de mi estancia, habría evitado varios desastres.
I want to write about this topic, because I think that its really interesting and curious. Although it may seem foolish, but it will help if you're an au pair! Believe me, if I had known what to take in my handbag the first days of my stay, I would have avoided many disasters.

Dicho esto, hablemos de qué cosas lleva una au pair en su bolso:
Once that is said, let's talk about what things an au pair takes in her handbag:

.- Paraguas. Algo IMPRESCINDIBLE si estás en UK, ya que el tiempo aquí está loco, así que por muy soleado que amanezca el día, hazme caso y coge el paraguas! Porque yo no lo hice y acabé mojada de arriba a bajo con chichones en la cabeza del granizo y aún no llego a entender cómo no me entró una hipotermia.

Umbrella. Something essential if you're in the UK, because the weather is just crazy here, so it doesn't matter if it's a sunny day. Just trust me! Take your umbrella! Because I didn't, and I got absolutly wet, my head got hurt because of a hailstorm. I don't even know how I didn't get hypothermia.

.-Diccionario de inglés. Yo no lo llevo en mi bolso, porque siempre lo olvido, pero si lo hubiera llevado, seguramente me habría ahorrado unas cuantas libras.

English dictionary. I don't take it in my handbag, because I always forget it, but if I had taken it, I surely would have saved a few pounds.

.-Móvil y dinero. Si te ocurre algo, siempre es bueno llevar algo de dinero encima y el móvil por si te hace falta llamar.

Mobile phone and money. If something happens to you, it´s always ok to have some money and your mobile phone to call if you need to.

.- Carnet Joven Internacional. Es algo que descubrí en el blog La maleta de una au pair de Erika, y que (de momento) me ha servido para ahorra dinero viajando en autobús. Con él, puedes conseguir una gran variedad de descuentos de todo tipo. Puedes conseguirlo aquí.

Youth Identity Card. It's something that I found out on Erika's blog La maleta de una au pair and, at the moment, It helped me to save money while traveling by bus. With it, you can get all kind of discounts. You can apply for it here.

.- Mi tesoro. Yo lo llamo así, porque es algo sin lo que no hubiera podido sobrevivir los primeros días de mi estancia y que voy a continuar necesitándo. Es un pequeño libro rosa en el que mi host mum (a quién, desde aquí, se lo agradezco) escribió todo tipo de cosas que podría necesitar los primeros días y, la verdad, es que me ha sido totalmente útil. Si no sé cómo poner la lavadora, miro mi libro rosa; si no sé encender la tele, miro mi libro rosa; si necesito algún número de teléfono, miro mi libro rosa; si necesito saber a qué hora sale el autobús, miro mi libro rosa; y así me podría pasar toooodo el día. Algo TOTALMENTE IMPRESCINDIBLE en mi bolso. 

My treasure. I call it like this, because without it, I couldn't have kept myself alive the first days in the UK, and it always is going to be useful. It's a little pink book that was writen by my host mum (who I want to thank from here) and where I could find every kind of useful information to help me in my first days. Honestly, it has totally been helpful to me. If I don't know how to do the laundry, i'll take a look at my pink book; if i don't know how to turn the TV on, i'll take a look at my pink book; if i need some phone number, i'll take a look at my pink book; if i need to know the bus timetable, i'll take a look at my pink book; I could spend my day like this. Something totally essential in my handbag.

Cada día hay muchas más cosas dentro de mi bolso, pero estas cinco creo que son las más importantes. Espero que os haya servido de ayuda. Ah, y... no olvidéis coger el paraguas antes de salir de casa si vivís en UK! 

Every single day there are more and more things in my handbag, but I think that these five things are the most important. I hope it helps you. Uh, and... don't forget to take your umbrella before leaving home if you live in the UK!

My host family

Hello! Quería escribir una entrada sobre mi familia de acogida, porque simplemente lo merece.

Después de 5 entrevistas, como ya dije, dí con la familia perfecta para mí. Aún sigo creyendo que es perfecta para mí, aunque obviamente no todo son flores y de color rosa. Estoy muy contenta, porque aunque tuve un vuelo fatal, horroroso, terrible y un largo etc, tuve una buenísima bienvenida. Mi host mum estaba esperándome en el aeropuerto sola, porque los niños estaban en el cole, y aunque debía estar trabajando, pasó todo el día conmigo. Desde el principio nos llevamos bien. Ha hecho todo y más para ayudarme. Comida, transporte, cuenta bancaria, clases... me ha ayudado con todo! Cuando llegamos a casa, me encontré dos postales de bienvenida hechas por los niños, me hizo mucha ilusión. Más tarde deshice las maletas, y seguidamente, mi host mum me llevó al centro de la ciudad para enseñarme todo. Después de comer, fuimos a recoger a los niños que, según mi host mum, estuvieron todo el día diciéndole a sus profesoras que hoy llegaba yo, Marta, su au pair. Pero parece que (al menos la niña) es muy vergonzosa. A penas me saludó cuando me vio, pero intenté ser comprensiva y dejarlo pasar, ya que tengo todo un año para hacer migas con ella, así que se puede tomar el tiempo que le haga falta. El niño me lo esperaba más bicho, pero es todo lo contrario. 

Cuando llegamos a casa, les di los regalos que les compré en España. Les encantaron! A la niña le compré un vestidito y unos zapatos de flamenca, porque le gusta mucho bailar y disfrazarse, así que me vino como anillo al dedo. De hecho, para salir a cenar esa misma noche se lo puso. Al niño le compré una camiseta muy chula en la que pone Valencia, también se la puso esa misma noche para salir a cenar. Por último (y no menos importante), a mi host mum, le compré un libro de cocina llamado "Cooking with olive oil" acompañado de, cómo no, una botella de aceite de oliva y jamón serrano que, por cierto, ya no queda. A los niños no les gustó el jamón serrano, pero a mi host mum y sus amigas les encantó! A parte, les compré a los niños unos cuadernillos para pintar y hacer puzzles con algunas frases en español para que aprendan un poco, y un kit para hacer cupcakes. Los regalos fueron un triunfo.¡Menos mal que no tuve que sacarlos de la maleta antes de subir al avión!

Es algo difícil tratar con mi host kid pequeña, porque es muy vergonzosa y siempre quiere ir con mum, pero espero, poco a poco, poder ganármela.
